Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de (1864-1901)Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, French painter, one of the great artists who lived and worked in Paris in the late 19th century including Degas, Cézanne, Gaugin, Van Gogh, Seurat and Renoir. At the age of 12 and 14 Toulouse-Lautrec broke first his left then his right legs and the bones failed to heal properly. As a result he grew into manhood with a normal size upper body but very short legs and his height when fully grown was only 1.5 metres (about 4.5 feet). Because of this deformity Toulouse-Lautrec tended to paint scenes from the Montmartre section of Paris where he was sociably accepted, scenes including circuses, dance halls, nightclubs and racetracks, scenes which were to later make him famous, particularly those of the Moulin Rouge. His frequent inhabitance of these areas regrettably gave rise to a problem with alcohol which ultimately led to his death in 1901.
